Key Facts

For any IVF / Fertility related query, concern or help, just call us

At Dr Mannan IVF Centre in New Delhi, where I have over 10 years of experience, I often meet couples who are just beginning to explore fertility treatments.

Many are anxious, fearing that “treatment” automatically means invasive procedures or high costs. I always reassure them that sometimes, a little help is all nature needs. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is often that first, gentle step.

My purpose here is to demystify IUI for you. I want to explain exactly what it is, who it helps, and how we perform it here at our Fertility clinic in Delhi.

We believe in starting with the simplest, most effective solution for your unique situation, always prioritising your comfort and safety.

Key Takeaways
  • A Natural Boost: IUI places sperm closer to the egg, giving nature a helping hand without bypassing the natural fertilization process.
  • Less Invasive: It is a simple, quick procedure that requires no surgery and minimal medication compared to IVF.
  • Cost-Effective: IUI is significantly more affordable than IVF, making it an excellent first-line treatment for many couples.
  • Expert Timing Matters: Success depends on precise timing and sperm preparation, areas where our clinic excels.

What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine Insemination, commonly known as IUI, is a fertility treatment where we place high-quality, prepared sperm directly inside a woman’s uterus

The goal is simple: to increase the number of healthy sperm that reach the fallopian tubes exactly when an egg is released.

Think of it as shortening the journey for the sperm. Instead of swimming from the cervix up to the fallopian tubes.

A journey where many sperm naturally get lost—we give them a “head start” by placing them right at the destination. It is less invasive than IVF and feels very similar to a standard pap smear.

Who is IUI For?

IUI is not for everyone, but it is an excellent option for specific fertility challenges. We typically recommend IUI for:

  • Mild Male Factor Infertility:
If the sperm count or motility is slightly low, the lab preparation process concentrates the healthy sperm, making IUI effective.

  • Unexplained Infertility:
When standard tests show normal results for both partners but pregnancy hasn’t happened, IUI combined with ovulation induction is often the first treatment.

  • Cervical Factor Issues:
Sometimes, the mucus produced by the cervix is too thick or hostile to sperm, preventing them from entering the uterus. IUI bypasses the cervix entirely.

  • Ovulation Issues:
For women with irregular ovulation (like in PCOS), we can stimulate ovulation with medication and time the IUI perfectly.
  • Donor Sperm:
For single women or couples needing donor sperm, IUI is the standard method of insemination.

However, for IUI to work, you must have at least one open fallopian tube and a reasonable amount of healthy sperm.

The IUI Process: Step-by-Step

Understanding the process can alleviate anxiety. Here is what you can expect during an IUI cycle at our centre:

  1. Ovulation Stimulation & Monitoring:
We may give you mild oral medication or injections to encourage your ovaries to produce one or two mature eggs.
We monitor the growth of these follicles closely with ultrasound scans.

  2. Triggering Ovulation:
Once the follicle is the right size, we administer a “trigger shot” (HCG) to ensure the egg is released at a precise time, usually 36 hours later.
  3. Sperm Collection & Preparation:
On the day of the procedure, the male partner provides a semen sample. Our advanced lab then “washes” the sperm.
This crucial step removes seminal fluid and debris, concentrating only the most active, healthy sperm into a small volume.

  4. The Insemination: This takes only a few minutes. You lie comfortably on an exam table.
I insert a very thin, flexible catheter through the cervix into the uterus and gently release the prepared sperm.
It is usually painless, though some women feel mild cramping.

  5. The Two-Week Wait:
After a brief rest at the clinic, you can return to your normal daily activities. We then wait about two weeks before taking a pregnancy test.

Success Rates and Realistic Expectations

It is important to have realistic expectations. IUI success rates depend heavily on age and the underlying cause of infertility.

Generally, success rates per cycle range from 10% to 20%. While this might seem modest compared to IVF, the cumulative success rate increases over 3 to 4 cycles.

We usually recommend trying 3 cycles of IUI. If pregnancy does not occur, we then sit down to discuss whether moving to IVF might be a more effective path.

We believe in transparent counselling so you never feel stuck in a cycle of unsuccessful treatments.

Cost of IUI Treatment in Delhi

One of the major advantages of IUI is its affordability. We strive to keep our costs transparent and accessible.

Treatment

Approximate Cost in Delhi

IUI Procedure (Single Cycle)

₹10,000 – ₹20,000

IUI with Donor Sperm

₹15,000 – ₹25,000

Understanding the Cost Variation:
The base cost covers the sperm preparation and the insemination procedure itself.

However, the total cost can vary depending on the medication used for ovulation (oral tablets vs. injections) and the number of monitoring ultrasounds required. Using donor sperm also involves an additional cost for the donor sample from a certified bank.

Why Choose Dr Mannan IVF Centre for IUI?

While IUI is a simpler procedure than IVF, precision is everything. Here is why patients in Delhi trust us with their care:

  • Advanced Andrology Lab:
The success of IUI relies heavily on how well the sperm is washed and prepared. Our lab uses advanced techniques to ensure maximum recovery of healthy, motile sperm.

  • Precise Timing:
We don’t rely on guesswork. Our meticulous monitoring ensures that insemination happens during your peak fertile window.

  • Personalised Protocols:
We tailor the stimulation medication to your body to maximise success while minimising the risk of multiple pregnancies (twins/triplets).

  • Gentle, Pain-Free Approach:
We prioritise your comfort. The procedure is performed with the utmost gentleness to ensure a stress-free experience.

Emotional Support and Wellness

Even “simple” treatments can be emotionally taxing. The “two-week wait” can be filled with anxiety.

At our centre, we support you beyond the medical procedure.

We offer counselling and guidance on managing stress, which is beneficial for treatment outcomes.

Preventive Care:
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle improves IUI success. We advise both partners to stop smoking, limit alcohol, and maintain a healthy diet in the months leading up to treatment.

For men, keeping the testicles cool and avoiding hot baths can improve sperm quality before the sample collection.

Conclusion

IUI is a bridge between natural conception and advanced fertility treatments. For many couples, it is the successful bridge to parenthood.

It is less invasive, more affordable, and effective for many common fertility issues.

At Dr Mannan IVF Centre in New Delhi, we are committed to guiding you across this bridge with expertise, honesty, and care.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Most women report little to no pain, describing it as similar to a pap smear. You might feel a slight pinch or mild cramping when the catheter passes through the cervix, but it is generally very well tolerated without anaesthesia.

Standard medical guidelines suggest 3 to 4 cycles. If pregnancy hasn’t occurred by then, the statistical likelihood of success with further IUI cycles drops, and we usually recommend discussing IVF.

Because we often use medication to stimulate the ovaries, there is a slightly higher risk of twins (about 8-10%) compared to natural conception. We monitor you closely to manage this risk.

You can resume normal activities immediately. We advise resting for 15-20 minutes at the clinic. There is no need for bed rest. You can work, travel, and exercise moderately.

Yes. We recommend abstaining from ejaculation for 2-3 days (but not more than 5 days) before the IUI procedure to ensure the sperm count is optimal on the day of collection.
